Constant Lestienne reached the second round at ATP Gijon this week, continuing his unbeaten streak on the main tour. This time, he needed a little luck because he struggled for the entirety of the first set and again fell down in the second set by a break before Sebastian Baez was compelled to withdraw with the score at 6-7, 4-4. Before 2022, the 30-year-old Frenchman has only achieved one victory on the main tour in a main-draw match, but he is currently one victory away from achieving three quarterfinal finishes at this level. He participated in his first ATP quarterfinal last month in San Diego and advanced further the following week in Tel Aviv (SF).
In the opening round, Arthur Rinderknech easily defeated lucky loser Carlos Taberner in straight sets, and he is just one victory away from reaching the quarterfinals on three separate occasions on the main circuit. His last two encounters, in Tel Aviv and Metz (QF), each saw him win exactly two games (QF). After several difficult months on tour, the former world number 48 is now playing on indoor hard courts with a modicum of self-assurance. His career-best season in 2021 saw him win an incredible 26 matches on the surface, and he achieved three quarterfinal finishes on the main circuit in Stockholm, Antwerp, and Marseille.
