In the opening round of the 2022 ATP Winston-Salem Open on Monday, German veteran Peter Gojowczyk will take against Czech Next Gen talent Jiri Lehecka.
Lehecka just won the Liberec Challenger on his home court, giving him three victories at that level. The young Czech, who was the top seed just a few weeks ago, was a clear favourite from the start and duly lived up to the expectations. Jiri Lehecka will begin his North American hard court season in Winston Salem, where he will need to swiftly adapt to the surfaces. For the first time since his incredible run to the semifinals of Rotterdam in February, the 20-year-old will compete on a surface, marking his first appearance in the final four at the tour level. He began 2022 at No. 141 in the world rankings, but in less than eight months, he shot up to within the top 60. And with the US Open only a week away, he will be playing in the main draws of all four Grand Slams for the first time in his young career.
With only 15 main draw matches and a staggering 12 losses, Peter Gojowczyk has spent the majority of this year preparing for ATP Tour events. However, it is very amazing that he was able to capitalise on Alexander Zverev‘s default in Acapulco to win both of his matches this season against opponents like Brandon Nakashima and Ugo Humbert. The 33-year-old German has a far higher ranking now than when he was as high as No. 39 in the world. Benoit Paire dealt him his most recent loss in Washington, which dealt him a devastating blow in his quest to break back into the top 100 in the world. Gojowczyk will undoubtedly need a strong week in Winston-Salem to give himself a chance to participate in the US Open qualifiers this year.
Jiri Lehecka and Peter Gojowczyk are scheduled to face one another in the opening round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Monday, August 22. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
The 2022 Winston-Salem Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for men’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 21 and conclude on August 27 this year.
