He will play his first main-draw match in Winston Salem, though, as a lucky loser now that he is there. A few months ago, the 26-year-old Dutchman went through a six-match losing streak while on tour, and he has had trouble maintaining consistency all season. The fact that he made his first quarterfinal appearance on the main tour in Melbourne and then followed it up with two more similar performances on clay and grass, which ultimately helped him break into the top-50 players, must make him happy with the way things have turned out over the past eight months.

On this year’s main tour, Alexei Popyrin is having a tremendously difficult time. He has been unable to accomplish much on the main tour thus far in 2022, despite winning a Challenger championship in Bordeaux and making it far in a few other competitions at that level. In the last eight months, the 2021 ATP Singapore champion has only finished three matches in the main draw of tour-level events, and his most recent two appearances at the Montreal Masters and Cincinnati Masters ended in the qualifying rounds. The Australian has previously made two appearances in Winston Salem, unlike his opponent. In 2019 and 2021, he overcame the first-round obstacle. A year ago, he even defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the second round here.
