In the 2022 ATP Winston-Salem Open's second round on Wednesday, world No. 81 Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea will take on world No. 116 Jason Kubler of Australia.
Korean player Soonwoo Kwon defeated Daniel Altmaier of Germany in straight sets on Monday to win his opening match in Winston-Salem. The match lasted one hour and 23 minutes. Six break points were presented to Kwon during the game, and he saved them all. He had four chances to break the No. 93 in the world, and he took advantage of three of them to win 6-1, 6-4. With the victory, Kwon raised his season record to 14-18 and claimed his first main draw victory since Atlanta. The 24-year-old had dropped out of Washington’s first round and was ineligible for Montreal and Cincinnati. This year, despite winning many first-round matches, he hasn’t advanced past the second round. Will he be able to improve on his 1-1 debut performance last year in Winston-Salem?
Jason Kubler earned a spot in the main draw and was given a bye in the opening round. He will launch his first Winston-Salem campaign on Tuesday during the second round. The World No. 116 defeated Marton Fucsovics of Hungary in the second qualifying round in an hour and 39 minutes by converting 4 of 9 break points and saving 7 of his total of 7 break points. The 29-year-old has an 8-4 record this year and performed best on grass. He advanced from the Wimbledon qualifying round to the Round of 16 before making it to the Newport semifinals. This year, Kubler has also performed well in competitions at a lower level. In Canberra, he won two ITF championships on clay, and in Little Rock, he won a Challenger title on hard. He came in second place in Orlando as well (on hard court).
Soonwoo Kwon and Jason Kubler are scheduled to face one another in the second round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Wednesday, August 24. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
