Tuesday's second round of the 2022 ATP Winston-Salem Open will feature Laslo Djere of Serbia versus Portugal's Joao Sousa, the 16th seed.
59 in the world Joao Sousa is competing in the main draw of the competition for the eighth time, but has yet to claim a victory. While he will be driven to win for the first time in his eighth attempt, his comeback form isn’t promising, which might put even more pressure on him. Since losing to Casper Ruud in the Geneva Open final, Sousa is 2-8 in his past 10 matches in the main draw. Most recently, he suffered a loss in the Canadian Open’s opening round of qualifying. However, the 33-year-old had a very strong start to the season as he went on to win his first ATP championship since 2018 and fourth overall in Pune, India. He has a 13-14 record this season as a result of that performance and his run to a 12th ATP final in Geneva. It will be intriguing to see if he can defeat the second-round opponent on Tuesday and end his Winston-Salem curse.
David Goffin was shocked by Laslo Djere‘s three-set victory over him on Monday in the opening round. Djere recovered from a break deficit to win the opening set. In the second set, David Goffin received the lone break to even the score. While the Serb once more overcame a deficit in the third set to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and end the two hours and six minutes of play. Djere won his first Winston-Salem main draw match with 26 wins and 10 aces served. In his lone prior contest in 2018, he had suffered a round-one defeat. The No. 89-ranked clay court expert had little success on his favoured surface, going 10-10 with only one semifinal appearance in Marrakech. With Monday’s victory being his fourth from nine hard court matches, he has yet to establish himself on these surfaces and has struggled this year.
Joao Sousa and Laslo Djere are scheduled to face one another in the second round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday, August 23. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
