On Tuesday in the first round of 2022 Canadian open, Veronika Kudermetova of Russia will face Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.
In her first competition in six weeks, Veronika Kudermetova maintained her strong form. She defeated Ons Jabeur in straight sets and Camila Giorgi in almost three hours to advance to the semifinals of San Jose in both singles and doubles, however she was unable to advance further. This season, she competed in 14 events, winning multiple matches in 10 of them and reaching the finals in Melbourne, Dubai, and Istanbul. She has also won two doubles championships and placed three times as a runner-up. In her Toronto debut, the Russian might emerge as a surprise contender.
Ajla Tomljanovic has failed to advance past the first round at the National Bank Open twice (in 2014 and in 2021), as well as once in Toronto (2019). After a gruelling qualifying campaign in which she defeated Harriet Dart, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, and Kimberly Birrell, 7-5, 7-6, she is ready for another chance. The Australian, who had a career-high ranking in February, has fallen outside of the top 70 after failing to earn any points from her second consecutive Wimbledon quarterfinal. She also had a mediocre start to her North American tour and gave Liudmila Samsonova a bye into the Citi Open second round.
Veronika Kudermetova and Ajla Tomljanovic are scheduled to face one another in the round of 64 of the 2022 Canadian Open on Tuesday, August 9. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 8 till August 15.
The 2022 edition of the Canadian Open is set to begin from August 8 and go on until August 15. The men’s final is scheduled to be on August 15 and the women’s one is set to be held on August 14. There will be six rounds of play in the main draw excluding the qualifiers.
