Veronika Kudermetova would not be disappointed with her results from the US Open Series, but given her form this season, she would have preferred to do better than a fourth-round appearance at Flushing Meadows. She had previously reached the semifinals in San Jose before losing to Shelby Rogers despite entering the match as a favorite. After a few weeks off, Kudermetova is back in action in Tokyo for the first time. After receiving a first-round bye, she will face an opponent who has only won her second WTA main draw match of the season. She clearly couldn’t have asked for a better first match after the break. 

The fact that Fernanda Contreras Gomez was an overwhelming 21/10 underdog to defeat former Grand Slam champion Sofia Kenin in her opening match wasn’t particularly shocking. The fact that she not only defeated Kenin, but did so in straight sets, was even more surprising. Before having to save a set-point in the ensuing tie-breaker, Gomez had an early break of serve in the first set and could have served it out at 5-4. Her second set-point allowed her to carve out the lead. In the second set, Gomez was up 5-1 at one point, but Kenin broke back twice to serve to tie the score at 5-5.
