While Karolina Pliskova has had a difficult year by her own lofty standards, she has recently shown signs of returning to her best, as evidenced by her opener here in Tokyo. The former world number one defeated Isabella Shinikova 6-2, 6-1 in a match that lasted less than an hour, with Pliskova breaking her opponent four times. Pliskova, on the other hand, faced only one break-point and easily saved it. The Czech players had previously reached the quarterfinals of the US Open and the semifinals of the Canadian Open. Following a dry spell, these two results helped Pliskova improve her 2022 win-loss record to 19-15.

Petra Martic also did not have too much trouble getting past Japanese qualifier Rina Saigo, much like how Pliskova tamed Shinikova. Saigo wasn’t expected to cause much damage because she wasn’t among the top 600 women, but Martic made the most of her inexperience. The Croat breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in just 70 minutes to advance to round two. Similar to Pliskova once more, the Croat broke her opponent five times, faced just one break point, and easily fended it off. Martic came into this competition after making it to the third round of the US Open and having earlier this season advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells Open.
