On Thursday, the Australian Jason Kubler plays the Serbian Laslo Djere in the third round of the 2022 ATP Winston-Salem Open.
Jason Kubler won three matches this week, and he will advance to the quarterfinals if he wins one more. Although the Australian has had a fantastic year thus far, the Wimbledon run stands out significantly. He played at a top 50 level, but unfortunately didn’t receive any credit for finishing outside the top 100. His run began with a victory in the qualifying rounds, and he has since added victories over Marton Fucsovics and Kwon Sonwoo to put himself in position to advance to the quarterfinals. Djere is a challenging opponent, but one that he should be able to defeat, particularly on hard courts. Djere was raised on clay, and he typically performs poorly on these surfaces. Jason Kubler should be able to complete this given that he is currently 45-14 for the year and 16-7 on hard courts. He only needs to carry on with his strategy and deny Djere numerous opportunities. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
The Serbian can find some form on the red dirt, where Laslo Djere plays his best tennis away from hard courts. He has a chance to beat Jason Kubler in order to go to a rare quarterfinal on hard courts. This week, Djere has already won two games, both of which were stunning victories. The first one, which is a noteworthy one, defeated David Goffin in three sets. Goffin is a strong player, but since Wimbledon, he hasn’t claimed a victory. When he next played Joao Sousa, he also defeated him in three sets. He dropped the first set, thus that victory was a comeback. Djere’s season has been alright thus far, but it has also included numerous devastating losses. His record on hard courts is 5-5, so he can certainly go better, but playing Kubler will be challenging. He will have to do well because otherwise it’s game over. Unfortunately, he occasionally does have serving troubles, which is far less of a problem on clay.
Jason Kubler and Laslo Djere are scheduled to face one another in the third round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Thursday, August 25. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
