On Thursday, the third round of the 2022 ATP Winston-Salem Open will feature Steve Johnson of the United States taking on Richard Gasquet of France.
In Winston-Salem, Steve Johnson has won two matches in a row and is cruising the competition. He defeated Pedro Marinez after defeating compatriot Emilio Nava in order to move on to round three. The American no longer plays tennis as frequently outside of the US, but strong results at home maintain him in the rankings. Johnson is an example of a classic American tennis player, with a powerful serve, solid, accurate groundstrokes, and the sporadic foray into the net. He can beat a player ranked in the top 50 if given the chance because of his superb execution skills. He cannot and need not compete with the greatest in the world. He has a record of 26-20, with several of his victories coming recently and during the grass season. Winston-Salem is a fantastic place for him as he participated in the semifinals here in 2018 and 2019. Gasquet is a challenging foe, but he’ll try.
Since the Frenchman is still producing some respectable tennis at this point in his career, Richard Gasquet is not going anywhere. By carefully selecting which events to participate in and which to forgo, he is actually having a fairly nice year. The final score was 23-17, with the majority of the victories coming on the ATP Tour. He hasn’t yet been shifted to challengers; instead, he took a break for a few weeks before coming back. Although Gasquet did not compete in Montreal or Cincinnati, he will use this tournament as his sole US Open warm-up. He has succeeded in defeating Lorenzo Musetti and Kamil Majchrzak thus far. Johnson will present Gasquet with a really good opportunity, and he will be driven to win and advance to the quarterfinals. He lost there both the previous year and the year before. If he continues to perform as well as he has thus far, he should have a reasonable chance of defeating the in-form Johnson.
Steve Johnson and Richard Gasquet are scheduled to face one another in the third round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Thursday, August 25. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
The 2022 Winston-Salem Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for men’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 21 and conclude on August 27 this year.
