Caroline Garcia v Petra Martic will take on each other on Saturday, July 16 in the semifinal round of the 2022 Lausanne open.
In Lausanne, Caroline Garcia has had a successful week. She recently defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-4, 6-1 to get to another semifinal. She had previously defeated Leolia Jeanjean and Jasmine Paolini in similar clinical victories. Garcia, a former World No. 4, has a respectable record against the top 10 players on the tour and is undoubtedly qualified to win the championship in Lausanne due to his experience and talent. She has done well to turn things around in the last few weeks after experiencing periods of inconsistency in the first half of the season.
Garcia holds a 3-0 lead, last winning over the Croatian in the 2018 Tianjin Open quarterfinal. Petra Martic just pulled off the biggest upset of the competition by defeating the number two seed and local favorite Belinda Bencic 6-3, 7-6. (2). For the 31-year-old, who has spent the most of the season suffering early losses, this is an uncommon accomplishment. However, the small bit of momentum she would occasionally have only occurred on clay courts. Martic has some experience, but she isn’t the tour’s most reliable performer. Since her previous singles final in September of 2019, she has only been in three circuit semifinals.
