Tim Van Rijthoven, one of the top players in this year’s grass swing, was defeated by Mitchell Krueger in the opening round of the ATP Newport this week, pulling off a major shock. He won the match 7-6 4-6 6-3 after winning the closely contested opening set in a tiebreaker and dominating the deciding set. His victory in Newport was also his first in the ATP. He failed in the qualifying rounds once in 2019 and had three of his previous four attempts here finish in the first round, including in 2021. He would reach his first quarterfinal finish on the main tour with one more victory. In Delray Beach and Houston, where both of his previous main-draw victories in ATP tournaments this year occurred, he was up against Grigor Dimitrov and Reilly Opelka in the second round of each respective tournament.

Last month, Maxime Cressy had terrific success on European grass, but he undoubtedly left Wimbledon feeling resentful. He put up all the effort to win the grass slam by defeating Felix Auger Aliassime in the first round, but he wasted numerous of opportunities to force a third set by falling to the underdog Jack Sock in the second round. When the French-American made his main-draw debut in Newport one year ago, he had never played a quarterfinal match on the main tour. By beating Paolo Lorenzi and Sam Querrey, he advanced to the quarterfinal. Both American player have never faced each other before and this will the first time when they will go head to head.
