In a match that he could have easily lost in straight sets, Sebastian Korda overcame Karen Khachanov in straight sets. He struggled to maintain control of the match, falling behind 1-3 in the first set and 3-6 in the 7-5, 7-6 tiebreaker of the second set. On indoor hard courts, the American teenager has achieved results without actually playing convincing tennis or managing matches. He played on the surface for the first time this year in Metz last month, making it to the quarterfinals. The following week, in Gijon, where he defeated Andy Murray and Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets and faced Arthur Rinderknech in the semifinal, he came in second place to Andrey Rublev.

Yoshihito Nishioka performed against Jaume Munar Clar in the second round this week with more assurance and improvement. Earlier in the season, he rallied from a set and a break down to defeat the teenage Belgian player Luca Van Assche, 5-7 6-2 7-6 in Round One. The top-ranked Japanese player has advanced no further than the quarterfinals on indoor hard courts at this level despite having won 59 matches on such surfaces overall and 14 just in 2022. He has reached this level four times, at Memphis in 2016, Stockholm in 2019, Cologne in 2020, and Singapore in 2021, but he has lost all four of those matches without taking a set.
