No. 2 in the world Anett Kontaveit maintained her strong form in Hamburg, advancing to the semifinals after quarterfinal opponent Andrea Petkovic quit in the second set. Despite arriving in poor shape, the 26-year-old put the frustrations of the previous three tournaments behind her as she proceeded to the last four without dropping a set this week. Kontaveit’s most difficult match was a first-round victory over Romanian Irina Bara, who pushed her to a tiebreak in the second set. That match was won by Kontaveit 6-3, 7-6. (7-3). In the semifinals, she will face a tough opponent, but having found a nice rhythm, the Estonian will fancy her chances against the Russian.
Kontaveit won their only meeting in Moscow in 2018. 63rd in the world Anastasia Potapova advanced to her third season semifinal after defeating third seed Barbora Krejcikova in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Russian, who won her first WTA championship in April in Istanbul, also reached the semifinals in Lausanne last week. While Krejcikova has struggled recently in singles, she was looking dangerous in this competition after two comfortable wins in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, though, the Czech was unable to compete with the in-form Potapova. Given Potapova’s recent form, Kontaveit will be a distant second. But the World No. 2 should ultimately make it to a third final.

The 2022 Hamburg European Open will have five rounds of play both for the ATP and WTA competitors. These are the first round, second round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 18 to July 24, but the qualifiers will commence from July 16 for both the men’s and women’s categories.
