In the opening round of the 2022 ATP Winston-Salem Open, Thanasi Kokkinakis, ranked 75th in the world, will face fellow Australian James Duckworth, ranked 82nd.
When it comes to injuries, Thanasi Kokkinakis’ career has been among the hardest. The Australian hasn’t exactly lived up to the enormous expectations that the tennis world had for him, despite having a remarkable skill as a youth. Kokkinakis had a breakthrough year in doubles, where he and partner Nick Kyrgios won his first major title in Melbourne. Currently ranked 75 in the world and 64 in the race to Turin, Kokkinakis is having his best season ever. The majority of his notable accomplishments, though, were in Australia, where he won the second event held there the week after reaching the semifinals in Adelaide. Although Kokkinakis hasn’t fully regained the early-season form, his heroic performance in Cincinnati last week’s opening round, where he narrowly defeated world No. 12 Jannik Sinner by two points, will give him hope. Kokkinakis has a strong chance to make a deep run this week in Winston Salem, where many of the top players have chosen out ahead of next week’s US Open, given the weapons of the Australian’s game, which include a huge serve and assured net play.
James Duckworth is accustomed to taking breaks from his duties. Similar to Andy Murray, the 82nd-ranked player in the world missed time earlier this year between February and May due to hip surgery. Before managing to earn a spot in the ATP 250 tournament in Eastbourne, the Australian dropped 8 consecutive matches to begin his season. After reaching the semifinals of a challenger tournament in Porto and the quarterfinals of the Hall of Fame Open in Newport, Rhode Island, his recent performances have been encouraging. Over the next couple of weeks, James Duckworth needs some outstanding performances. After winning a challenger tournament in Istanbul and making it all the way to the quarterfinals of the ATP 1000 event in Paris last year, he will soon be defending a sizable number of ranking points. Duckworth will be buoyed by his two challenger level victories over Kokkinakis in 2013 and 2014, despite the fact that they have never met at the tour level. With a couple recent victories under his belt, the lower-ranked Australian will be full of confidence going into this match.
Thanasi Kokkinakis and James Duckworth are scheduled to face one another in the opening round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Monday, August 22. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
The 2022 Winston-Salem Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for men’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 21 and conclude on August 27 this year.
