On Monday, the seventh seed Karen Khachanov of Russia will face Jan Lennard Struff of Germany in the opening round of ATP Hamburg open 2022.
Although Karen Khachanov hasn’t accomplished much recently, he has done well to get respectable results in his most recent outings. He had back-to-back quarterfinal finishes during the grass swing in s’Hertogenbosch and Halle last month after falling to the in-form Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 16 at the French Open. In Hamburg, the former Russian No. 1 is currently making his third appearance. He overcame none other than Jan Lennard Struff in the first round of his most recent participation in 2020, and he reached the quarterfinals here during his first campaign back in 2017. The world’s 26th-ranked player has a 7/6 record on clay so far this season, and the last time he had more than seven victories on the surface was in 2017, when he finished the year with 13 victories on the surface and eight losses. Reaching the semifinal in Belgrade (R1 bye and walkover in R2) and the round of 16 at the French Open were his greatest results on the surface in 2022.
By defeating Marcos Giron on grass in Stuttgart last month, Jan Lennard Struff was able to halt his dreadful eight-match losing streak and earn his second victory of the year. He was unable to add any more victories, though, as he dropped his next four games on the main tour. It will be intriguing to see if the German’s newfound confidence would help him succeed on the main tour after he went on to win the Braunschweig Challenger championship without dropping a set. He has competed in the Hamburg main draw nine times, and five of those matches, including his most recent two in 2020 and 2021 against Karen Khachanov and Laslo Djere, respectively, were eliminated in the first round.
Karen Khachanov and Jan Lennard Struff will take on each other on Monday, July 18 in the first round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 18 and conclude on July 24 this year.
