On Friday, Americans Sofia Kenin and Bernarda Pera will compete in the 2022 WTA Cleveland Open quarterfinal.
When Sofia Kenin entered the court for her first match here against Dalayna Hewitt, she was on a nine-match losing run. The fact that she won it to end the hoodoo would have given her a huge confidence boost since despite winning matches frequently in the past, the former Grand Slam champion presumably thought she could accomplish it now. With Kenin winning in another straight sets in the second round, it appeared that very same confidence had returned. In the second round, Kenin faced Irina-Camelia Begu, the 1/2 favourite, and easily defeated her 6-3, 6-2 for just her fourth victory of the year. Prior to losing to form and fitness, she had won a few rounds at the Adelaide International in January.
Barbora Krejcikova hasn’t exactly been in top shape lately, but Bernarda Pera would have been extremely happy just to cross the finish line against the former Grand Slam champion in her second round match. Pera defeated Krejickova in the second round with just five games lost after a straightforward victory over Eri Hozumi in the opening round. With four serve breaks against her Czech opponent, Pera won 6-4, 6-1 in a match that lasted almost an hour and a half. Pera, on the other hand, faced no break points and won 71% of her first serve points and an astounding 78% of her second serve points. She came into this match fresh off a finals appearance at the WTA 125 tournament in Concord, and with back-to-back victories here, she should go into this match versus Kenin as the favourite.
Sofia Kenin and Bernarda Pera are scheduled to face one another in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Cleveland Open on Thursday, August 25. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
The 2022 Cleveland Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 21 and conclude on August 27 this year.
