On Thursday, the 67th-ranked Magda Linette will compete in the quarterfinal of the 2022 WTA Cleveland Open against the 45th-ranked Ludmilla Samsonova.

Linette defeated Sorana Cirstea with relative ease to advance to the round of eight, matching the result of their first-round match. Linette, who had previously defeated Yulia Putintseva 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round, triumphed similarly over her Romanian rival to advance to her second quarterfinal in three matches on hard courts. An astounding 90% of the points Magda Linette won during the match—which lasted an hour and 23 minutes—came on her first serve. In fact, Linette’s serving was so comprehensive that throughout the entire match, she only dropped seven points on her serves. She didn’t encounter any break points and as a result, she broke Cirstea’s service three times: once in the first set and twice in the second.

Samsonova improved her hard court performance after a shaky start by winning her eighth straight match on the WTA circuit. Ludmilla Samsonova defeated Laura Siegemund in the second round with just three games lost after winning the Washington Open and then being inactive at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open. This came after she defeated Iryna Shymanovich in her opening round 6-1, 6-0. Samsonova had previously demonstrated her talent in Washington with wins over Elise Mertens and Emma Raducanu to advance to the final, where she narrowly defeated Kaia Kanepi. Following a victory on the grass court of the Berlin Open last year, it was only her second WTA title overall.

Magda Linette and Ludmilla Samsonova are scheduled to face one another in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Cleveland Open on Thursday, August 25. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.

The 2022 Cleveland Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 21 and conclude on August 27 this year.
