In the second round of the competition, Daria Kasatkina defeated Magdalena Frech in about 1 hour and 20 minutes, winning in straight sets. Kasatkina had a considerably easier time this time after a challenging prior triumph over Greet Minnen in which she had to overcome the loss of the first to prevail. Russian triumphed 6-3, 6-2. In each of the two sets, Kasatkina lost her serve once, but by the time the Russian had broken her twice in a row, it was too late for her opponent to recover. Kasatkina eventually ended the match with her third break of the second set and easily advanced to the quarterfinals. The world number 10’s victory comes after consecutive first round losses at the Canadian Open and Cincinnati Open.

Parrizas Diaz won easily in the second round after losing just three games in the tournament’s opening round in Granby. In a match that lasted an hour and 54 minutes, Parrizas Diaz defeated Rebecca Peterson 6-2, 6-1 before overcoming Harriet Dart 6-2, 6-4 in the second set. There were a massive 26 breakpoints throughout the match, but Parrizas Diaz outperformed her British rival thanks to her defensive play, as the Spaniard was able to stop 13 of them. She then won the next two sets in straight sets after breaking Dart five times. Parrizas Diaz will be quite confident going into this match against Kasatkina, but will that be enough for a 64th-ranked player to defeat the world’s top player? It is still uncertain.
