Mikael Ymer and Aslan Karatsev will face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open October 12.
Tim Van Rijthoven was up against an opponent who had won 21 matches on indoor hard courts this year and 12 in Italian hardcourt competitions alone (at all levels). Mikael Ymer put on a super-dominant display to defeat Van Rijthoven easily, 6-1 6-2. Considering how poorly he fared in the qualifying rounds over the weekend, this was by far his greatest performance of the season. In QR1, he was down 0-3 in the first set against the 38-year-old Andreas Seppi, and in the last round of qualifying, he was down 0-3 to Borna Gojo.
After Tallon Griekspoor, Aslan Karatsev’s opponent in the first round, was forced to withdraw early in the second set, down 3-6 1-2, Aslan Karatsev’s five-match losing run came to an end. In his last ten completed matches, he has only won one, and he runs the risk of dropping out of the top 50 in the ATP rankings. The former world #14 entered the 2022 season with high hopes and expectations following a tremendously successful 2021 campaign. He also got off to a great start by capturing the title in Sydney. However, things deteriorated in the ensuing months, and for the duration of the year, he has been playing without belief or confidence.
Mikael Ymer and Aslan Karatsev are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP Firenze Open on Wednesday, October 12. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 10 and end on October 16.
