The 2022 WTA Citi Open's first round will feature Greet Minnen and number six seed Kaia Kanepi on Monday.
At 37 years old, Kaia Kanepi is one of the oldest players in the current WTA top 100, but she has continued to play well and is expected to have a strong season in 2022. She is 20-11, rated 36th in the world, and has already earned more than $800,000. A quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open, which was a first for her, and round-three finishes at the French Open, Charleston Open, Miami Open, and Indian Wells Open are some of her career high points. In fact, Kanepi has displayed consistency on all fields of play. She lost in the initial matches, so the grass swing may not have been all that great, but the fact that she participated in the major competitions says a lot. The Estonian has defeated players like Garbine Muguruza, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Donna Vekic, Belinda Bencic, and Aryna Sabalenka throughout the course of the past year.
Greet Minnen, 24, had an unimpressive season with a score of 15-14. In her last five events, the Belgian has only managed two victories, falling to a diverse group of competitors including Qinwen Zheng, Sabine Lisicki, Kateryna Baindl, and Anna Blinkova. She has lost in the first matches for the majority of her WTA Tour season. A significant portion of those 15 victories occurred on the ITF tour, particularly in Altenkirchen and Nur-Sultan, where she advanced to the final. Minnen hasn’t competed in a WTA singles final yet. Her pedigree isn’t as solid as Kanepi’s because she lacks elite experience and a great resume versus the top 50.
Kaia Kanepi and Greet Minnen will face each other in the first round of the 2022 Citi open on Monday, August 1. The WTA 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
