Against Olga Danilovic, Jule Niemeier played two hours of sloppy tennis, committing eight double faults and connecting on less than half of her first serves. On her fifth attempt, she barely defeated the Serbian qualifier, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, to earn her first victory of the year. She recently had an 0-4 Australian swing and an 0-8 set record. To be fair, she encountered some formidable opposition during her trip to Australia, including the world No. 1 Iga Swiatek in Melbourne. With three of her five quarterfinal appearances occurring in the 2022 season—at Wimbledon on grass, Lausanne on clay, and Cluj-Napoca on indoor hard courts—the German has a 5-2 record in last-16 matches on the tour.
The first WTA indoor tournament of Camila Osorio’s career saw her pull off a minor upset in the opening round. She faced third-seeded Alize Cornet, the hometown favourite, and battled through exhaustion to win 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in just over two hours. Even the ostensibly simple deciding set took 42 minutes. She had only competed in two professional tournaments held indoors before this week, reaching the quarterfinals of the 125K Midland in November after defeating Eugenie Bouchard and Elizabeth Mandlik. She would be grateful for her first WTA quarterfinal appearance since Bogota in April after being plagued by bad form.
