Tunisian tennis player Ons Jabeur had a difficult start to her 2022 WTA Finals campaign as she fell short against Aryna Sabalenka on Tuesday. Jabeur did win the first set but a determined Sabalenka held her nerve and delivered an inspirational performance to hand the reigning Madrid Open champion a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 5-7 defeat. The Tunisian hit seven aces in the match and returned six out of 10 break points. She did however commit five double faults and had a lower win percentage on the second serve than her opponent.

American Jessica Pegula didn’t fare any better than her upcoming opponent as she was defeated after an intense match against Maria Sakkari in her first match. The match might have ended in only two sets but both went to a tiebreak. Sakkari scored three aces and returned four out of nine break points to take a hard fought 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7,4) victory.
