John Isner and Sebastian Korda are scheduled to face one another in the Third round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Friday, August 19.
John Isner is a seasoned veteran who still knows his way around the court. The victory over Hubert Hurkacz was particularly impressive, but he was aided by the Pole’s fatigue. Nonetheless, Isner deserves a lot of credit for what he’s done this year because it’s more than just the serve. His game is far more complete and consistent, and the serve clearly helps. The score is 20-15, which is fairly solid, but it has a 7-8 record on hard courts. Better players do find a way to beat Isner, and Korda is unquestionably one of the best in the world. Isner will have to be cautious in this one because he has already lost to Korda twice.
Sebastian Korda‘s shin issues are no longer a concern, as the American looks very good after taking a break before this part of the season. Korda improved dramatically in Washington after a slow start in Atlanta, and he’s looking great this week as well. Korda’s victories over Karen Khachanov and Frances Tiafoe were impressive, and the chance to face Isner in the quarterfinals is appealing. The younger American understands how to win that matchup, and he understands that it is all about keeping the ball in play and forcing Isner to make a decision. Much will be determined by how well he returns, but he has a decent return that can get the ball deep in the court.
