On Saturday, John Isner and Maxime Cressy, two fellow countrymen, will face off in the 2022 Hall of Fame Open semifinals.
Isner defeated Peter Gojowczyk in straight sets in the second round to earn a quarterfinal matchup with Benjamin Bonzi. In the first set, the Frenchman got out to a quick 4-2 lead but lost it when his opponent matched the score. After then, Isner gained the upper hand to lead 6-5, but he was unable to serve out the set despite having a set point. However, the American player took the opening tie-break by winning seven straight points. There was a tie-break for the second set as well. The American had a 6-3 lead and three match chances, but Bonzi maintained his composure and won five straight games to force a deciding. Similarly, the third set required a tie-break. Isner was now up 6-1. But Bonzi wasn’t about to go down without a fight. The American finally prevailed on his eighth match point to win 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 7-6(5) after saving four more match opportunities.
Maxime Cressy faced off against fellow American Steve Johnson in the quarterfinals following a straightforward victory over Mitchell Krueger. In the opening set, which was decided by a tie-break, neither player was able to achieve a break of service. Johnson established a 4-0 cushion, which was sufficient for him to win the set. The first eight games of the second set saw a tie between the two players. When the score was 5-4, Cressy broke his rival’s serve. He held service to end the set and tie the match after avoiding a break point.
John Isner and Maxime Creesy will take on each other on Saturday, July 16 in the semifinal of the 2022 ATP Hall of Fame Open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 11 and conclude on July 17 this year.
