In the second round (R1 bye) of the ATP Antwerp, Hubert Hurkacz faced a challenging opening matchup against the gifted Jack Draper, and he needed a little bit of good fortune to prevail. The British player’s momentum was halted by the medical timeout he took in the opening moments of the decisive set. The player soon began to physically tyre and lost the third set, 7-6 6-7 6-1, without much of a struggle. After Miami (SF), Monte Carlo Masters (QF), and Madrid Masters (QF) in the first half, the Pole will now make his third straight quarterfinal appearance on the main tour. This is the second time this year that he plays quarterfinal matches in three consecutive events.

In the second round, Dominic Thiem battled hard on the court with Francisco Cerundolo, a formidable foe, and narrowly prevailed. The Austrian trailed by a break at one point in the tough decider, 6-1 1-6 7-5, after each player won a set easily. The former world #3 has competed in 28 best-of-three-sets matches across all competitions since signing up for the main circuit this year in Bastad (July), and 13 of those matches have gone the full distance. An encouraging indicator for someone who missed the most of the 2021 season due to injury and appeared hopeless upon his return to activity in the 2022 season is playing so many three-setters against challenging opponents and winning.
