Marc-Andrea Hueser defeated Holger Rune in straight sets in his first-ever final match on the main tour last month at an indoor competition in Sofia, turning it into his first ATP title. In that season, he defeated three players ranked in the top 50, including Lorenzetti of the ATP Hamburg Championship and Pablo Carreno Busta, the defending champion of the Montreal Masters. The big-serving Swiss lost his first match following his victory in Sofia to Emil Ruusuvuori, 0-6 2-6, and it ended up being one of his worst performances of the year. Following the Biel Challenger (IH) in March, it was the second time in 2022 that he had dropped a set 0-6.

Francisco Cerundolo has established himself in 2022 across all surfaces, and this week, he created a name for himself on indoor hard courts by defeating Manuel Guinard in the opening round of the ATP Gijon tournament. Prior to this month, he has only ever participated in one match on the surface, which was at the Challenger level back in 2019. At the start of the 2022 season, the young Argentinean player had a ranking outside the top 100, but he is now inside the top 30. He advanced to the Miami Masters semifinal, won his first ATP crown in Bastad on his favourite clay, and defeated Rafael Nadal in straight sets at Wimbledon.
