Geoffrey Blancaneaux and Marc-Andrea Huesler will face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Wednesday, September 28.
Marc-Andrea Huesler’s productive stay in the United States came to an end as he was soundly defeated by Daniel Elahi Galan in the opening round of ATP San Diego last week. Prior to that, he qualified for Winston Salem and advanced to the semifinals, where he faced off against Denis Shapovalov in a five-set match. The big-serving Swiss has had the least success thus far this year on indoor hard courts, where he has played nine matches and lost six of them. Given that he has the talent to perform well in these circumstances and has even won at least ten matches on indoor hard courts in each of the previous three seasons, his troubles on the surface this year seem a bit surprising.
In 2016, Geoffrey Blancaneaux defeated Felix Auger Aliassime to win the Boys’ French Open championship. He also rose as high as number five in the junior rankings that year. His inability to successfully move to the main circuit, more than a lack of talent, is what has prevented him from doing so. When he is well, the gifted French youth can play excellent tennis, as he demonstrated frequently this year. He has already retired four times in 2022, yet he has still amassed 39 victories, won an ITF title, and advanced far in a couple Challenger events.
Marc-Andrea Huesler and Geoffrey Blancaneaux are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 ATP Sofia Open on Wednesday, September 28. The tournament is scheduled to begin on September 26 and end on October 2.
