In the Round of 16, Pegula got back at Camila Giorgi, beating the Italian 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. 28-year-old who has won one WTA championship, has made it to one final this year, which she lost to Ons Jabeur at the WTA 1000 in Madrid. Additionally, she reached the Miami semifinals and the quarterfinals of the Australian and French Opens.

Simona Halep, the world’s No. 15, ended Coco Gauff‘s valiant tournament run to go to her sixth season quarterfinal. After Friday’s victory, the 30-year-old Romanian raised her record for the year to 36-10. She reached the last four this week without dropping a set in the first four rounds thanks to her excellent play this week. In the first round, Halep easily defeated Donna Veki 6-0, 6-2 before eliminating Zhang Shuai of China 6-4, 6-2 in the second. She defeated Jil Teichmann 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the quarterfinals, then on Friday, she outlasted Gauff 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in a match that lasted an hour and 48 minutes. Halep, a 23-time champion after 41 finals, made it to her only final of the year at the Melbourne Summer Set before taking home the trophy. Halep has won the Canadian Open twice, in 2016 and in 2018.
