Sunday's 2022 WTA Canadian Open final pitting Simona Halep against Beatriz Haddad Maia is shaping up to be an intriguing rivalry.
Halep needed to come back from a set down to defeat Jessica Pegula and go to the tournament’s final for the fourth time in her career after winning her previous four matches in a row in straight sets. Simona Halep defeated Pegula 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and fourteen minutes. Halep had previously won the Canadian Open. In the match, both players achieved five serve breaks, although Halep’s came in the fifth and seventh games of the decisive set. Halep maintained her serve and quickly won the match while Pegula was able to push one of them back. In one of the biggest victories of the competition, she had previously defeated Cori Gauff. Can she here soften Haddad Maia’s rigid form?
Haddad Maia has already advanced to the finals, so even a loss to Halep cannot prevent her from ascending to the top 20 on the WTA Rankings rankings. Given the kind of season the Brazilian had—winning three titles, including two on grass and one on clay—she is more than deserving of it. Not to mention the kind of run Haddad Maia had in this tournament alone, when she defeated Karolina Pliskova, Leylah Fernandez, Iga Swiatek, and Belinda Bencic to win. Pliskova was the victim of her tennis fury in her most recent match, losing in a two hours, three minute contest. Haddad Maia won the competition 6-4, 7-6 (7).
