Beatriz Haddad Maia and Naomi Osaka are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 Tokyo Open September 22.
It’s been the kind of season that has made Beatriz Haddad Maia a household name, and while her performances in the last three tournaments haven’t quite lived up to those newfound expectations, she should be confident going into her second round match. This came after she dispatched Yuki Naito in her first match, winning 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 45 minutes. Haddad Maia’s ability to repel Naito at the most difficult of times stood out in the encounter. In the match, she saved five breakpoints while breaking the Japanese player three times. Haddad Maia’s serving was also notable, with the Brazilian completing 80% of her serves and winning 80% of her points.
Naomi Osaka was on a four-match losing streak coming into this match, and while she did break the curse, it was in rather tragic circumstances. Daria Saville, Osaka’s first-round opponent, was screaming in pain just a game into the first set after appearing to have done her knee. While Saville was able to walk around gingerly later, she was unable to finish the match, giving Osaka the victory. That means Osaka has yet to win a full match since her first-round victory over Qinwen Zheng in San Jose. In fact, since reaching the final of the Miami Open, Osaka’s win-loss record has been a dismal 3-7.
