Although she is the tournament’s top seed, Jelena Ostapenko had to dig deep in order to defeat wildcard entrant Jeong Bo-young in her opener. Ostapenko, who began as a 1/100 favourite to win the match, won 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2) in two hours and 14 minutes to advance to the second round. Ostapenko was a break down in the first set, then a break up, then a break down again before breaking her opponent twice in a row to take the lead. She was broken three more times in the second set as Bo-young leveled the match. In round two, Latvia’s number one hopes to turn things around.

Astra Sharma was a close 1/1 favorite to win her opener against Anastasia Gasanova, but it was the Russian who prevailed in two tough sets to secure her second round berth. After defeating Alison Riske in the first round of the Chennai Open, the 141st-ranked Gasanova defeated Australia’s Sharma in a match that lasted nearly two hours. Sharma had a chance to serve out the first set at 5-4, but Gasanova won three games in a row to shut her down. The Russian missed serving out the second set – and the match – at 5-3, but she broke Sharma again as she served to stay in the match at 5-6.
