David Goffin and Diego Schwartzman are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP European Open on October 20.
David Goffin’s victory in this week’s first round at home in Antwerp would not have improved his mood or sagging confidence. The Belgian No. 1 lost the second set, dropped the third set, and gave up his service once in the decider, 7-6 5-7 6-4, against the outstanding Gilles Arnaud Bailly, a teenager who had played just seven professional matches in his career before to this week. The confidence and spirit of the former world #7 have already taken some hits in the second part of the season. During the summer hardcourt swing, he lost to players like Albert Ramos Vinolas and Laslo Djere and was defeated by a weakened Gilles Simon in straight sets.
Only 28 of Diego Schwartzman’s matches have resulted in victories on indoor hard courts so far in his career, and 12 of them victories have taken place in Antwerp, where he reached the semifinals once in 2018 and twice finished second in 2016, 2017, and 2021. The top-ranked Argentine will now try to build on his stellar performance in Antwerp by claiming his first victory on the surface this year. He lost each of his three matches this year against Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Laver Cup, Arthur Rinderknech in Tel Aviv, and Mikael Ymer at the Davis Cup on indoor hard courts.
David Goffin and Diego Schwartzman are scheduled to face each other in the second round of the 2022 ATP European Open on Thursday, October 20. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 17 and end on October 23.
The ATP European Open will have five rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The competition’s main draw is set to commence on October 17, 2022 and conclude on October 23, 2022.
