Cori Gauff and Léolia Jeanjean are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
Gauff would have liked to go as far, if not further, in Cincinnati after reaching the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open earlier this month. However, an ankle twist in the first set of her opener against Marie Bouzkova left Gauff in excruciating pain and forced her to withdraw from the match. She later revealed that it was just a minor ankle sprain and that nothing to worry about. Gauff will put her ankle to the test again in this match, hoping to add to her 15 wins in hard court competitions this season. She has 10 losses to her name and has never reached the final of a hard court event since winning the Linz in 2019.
Leolia Jeanjean had previously surprised many fans by reaching the third round of the French Open. More importantly, victories over 1/5 favorites Nuria Parrizas Diaz and Karolina Pliskova in that tournament would have given Jeanjean confidence in her own abilities. Jeanjean has won a few rounds since then, but her best performances at the highest level have all come on clay. In fact, the 149th-ranked player will be playing her first main draw match of a hard court tournament here, having breezed through the qualifiers. Ipek Oz pushed Jeanjean to the third set, but she then breezed past Varvara Flink and Georgina Garcia-Perez in the next two rounds.
