Jannik Sinner has had health difficulties (knee issues and COVID) throughout the season, and earlier this month in the ATP Sofia semifinal, when he was one game away from losing to Holger Rune, he quit for the fourth time this year. Despite all of the difficulties, the 21-year-old has performed admirably to accumulate 45 victories and earn his top-10 debut. He has only ever lost in the first round of a match; it was against Tommy Paul in his first match back after a three-week hiatus in Eastbourne.

In the opening round of the ATP Stockholm tournament last week, Cristian Garin defeated a shaky Jason Kubler to make his indoor hard court debut for the year. So far this year, he has had a 1/3 record on the surface, and two of those defeats came at the hands of eventual champions Novak Djokovic in Astana and Holger Rune in Stockholm. The Chilean’s victory over Jason Kubler marked his first triumph in an indoor competition since the ATP Vienna 2020, where he made his debut (and sole appearance) and overcame Stan Wawrinka in the first round in three sets.
