Petra Kvitova, who is ranked 28th in the world, will compete against Caroline Garcia, who is ranked 35th, in the 2022 WTA Cincinnati Open final on Sunday.
Keys made life challenging for the previous Wimbledon champion, so it took Petra Kvitova some time before she could open the doors to the final. Kvitova played for two hours and twenty-five minutes before winning 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-3 in a contest in which the Czech gradually asserted dominance over the opposition. Keys led Kvitova 3-1 in the opening set until the Czech player broke back, but the American always held the advantage in the ensuing tiebreaker. Kvitova started to turn things around in the second set when she twice broke her opponent, and she continued to do so in the third set as well. Before her straightforward victory over Ajla Tomljanovic that advanced her to the semifinal, Kvitova had already defeated players like Jil Teichmann, Sorana Cirstea, and Ons Jabeur in earlier stages. Can she capture her first championship in Cincinnati?
Despite not having the best of seasons, Aryna Sabalenka would have felt confident enough to compete against a player ranked 35th after reaching the semifinals of this tournament in Cincinnati. Instead, Caroline Garcia defeated her Belarusian opponent by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, winning the match in exactly two hours. Sabalenka gained the upper hand in the second set thanks to five consecutive serve breaks, but Garcia was unable to recover in the third after breaking her opponent in the fourth game. She finished off the victory by avoiding three breakpoints. Garcia will be hoping to extend this winning streak after earlier wins over Maria Sakkari, Elise Mertens, and Jessica Pegula.
Caroline Garcia and Petra Kvitova are scheduled to face one another in the finals of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Sunday, August 21. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
