Caroline Garcia, world No. 48, came back from a set down to defeat fellow Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet in the first round of the Palermo Open. Garcia, who was 11-2 in her past three events, was up a break twice in the opening set on Tuesday, but Paquet came back on both occasions to force a tiebreak. The World No. 103 won the tiebreak to lead by one set to love. Garcia, on the other hand, bounced back in the second set, breaking her opponent twice and keeping her prospects in the match alive. Garcia built a 4-0 lead in the deciding set.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto, world no. 111, defeated fellow Italian Sara Errani in 57 minutes to go to the second round in Palermo. World No. 127 Errani, who won a WTA 125K competition earlier this month and finished second in a WTA125 event last month, couldn’t hold service once in the match as the 21-year-old Cocciaretto annihilated the 35-year-old. Cocciaretto, a quarterfinalist in Budapest last week, has done very well this year in lower level clay court tournaments. Last month, the Italian reached the finals of the WTA 125 in Makarska, Croatia. She has won two ITF clay court titles and finished second in one.

Tournament format

The 2022 Palermo Open will have five rounds of play for WTA competitors. These are the first round, second round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 18 to July 24, but the qualifiers will commence from July 16 for women’s categories.
