Fritz’s victory at the Tokyo Open was his third of the season for the American, and it kept his hopes of reaching the ATP finals alive. However, in his first match since then, Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan, the world number 37, put him to the test. In the first set, there was little to choose between them, and it took a tie-break, which Fritz won, to finally separate them. Break chances began to appear in the second set, and Fritz had match point at one point, but the Japanese saved it. When Fritz was broken early in the third set, it appeared that the tide was turning against him. But he broke back, then again, eventually wrapping up a hard fought victory.

Denis Shapovalov’s best result of the season had been a semi-final loss to Fritz in Japan, and a second round defeat in Stockholm last week was indicative of some of his struggles for form in 2022. But he got off to a strong start in Vienna, defeating Austrian wildcard Jiri Rodionov. The Austrian, ranked 130th in the world, was the first to drop his serve in the first set. He immediately responded with a break of his own, only to fall behind once more. The following game, Shapovalov completed the set. The Canadian broke early in the second set and went on to have three match points before Rodionov broke back. The reprieve was brief, as Shapovalov broke him again to win the match.
