On Wednesday, Taylor Fritz, the 13th-ranked player in the world, will play Alexei Popyrin of Australia in the second round of the 2022 ATP Citi Open.
In his most recent game, Taylor Fritz had his chance. He had a chance to beat Rafael Nadal and advance to the Wimbledon semifinals, where he would face Nick Kyrgios. Unfortunately for him, Nadal’s game improved during that match even as his fitness declined, and the American gave it his all in the fifth set tiebreaker. After a hiatus of over a month, the American will resume competition when he plays a rival who is ranked 83rd in the world and has a strong record on hard courts. This season, Fritz has already won the Indian Wells Masters championship and advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open. And with a whole season of hard court tennis ahead of him, he would want to surpass his current ranking of 13 and possibly even break into the season’s top eight players to help him qualify for the ATP Finals.
Popyrin was always going to be the favourite going into their opening match because Tung-lin Wu has never been ranked higher than 179th in the world. However, the Australian found it to be much simpler than expected. Wu had to leave the match six games into it due to a fitness issue, giving Alexei Popyrin his first major draw of the season since March. Popyrin will now be hoping that he can live up to the Fritz challenge after losing his opener at the Atlanta Open last week. However, he will have to do significantly better than he has thus far this season, during which time he has only won four games in all.
Taylor Fritz and Alexei Popyrin will face each other in the second round of the 2022 Citi open on Wednesday, August 3. The ATP 500 competition is scheduled to start from August 1 and end on August 7 this year.
