Taylor Fritz and Nick Kyrgios will face one another in the Second round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Wednesday, August 17.
Taylor Fritz of the United States got his Cincinnati campaign off to a fast start, dispatching Argentina’s Sebastian Baez on Tuesday. The World No. 13 was not broken during the match, as he saved all three break points. He served exceptionally well, dropping only 9 of his 39 service points. Fritz broke Baez twice in the first set and three times in the second for a 6-1, 6-1 victory in 55 minutes. The 24-year-old is only making his fifth appearance at the Cincinnati Open, but it was his second victory after three previous first-round exits. Fritz’s record now stands at 33-13 as a result of the victory. This year, he has won two titles, in Indian Wells and Eastbourne.
Despite some ups and downs, Nick Kyrgios maintained his perfect first-round record in 2022 after defeating Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to advance to the second round in Cincinnati. The World No. 28 hit 10 aces, 32 winners, and converted three of four break points to defeat the Spaniard 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 31 minutes, improving to 11-0 in first-round matches this year. Kyrgios has been in outstanding form all season, and his season record now stands at 31-8. The Washington Open champion’s nine-match winning streak came to an end last week when he lost to Hubert Hurkacz in the Canadian Open quarterfinals.
