Magdalena Frech and Yulia Putintseva are scheduled to face each other in the first round of the 2022 WTA Guadalajara Open on October 18.
Frech hasn’t had the best season in 2022, with only 10 main draw wins in WTA 250 (or higher) tournaments, and her ranking has dropped as a result. Magdalena Frech had a season-high ranking of 82nd in the world before dropping to 128th as a result of the aforementioned results. More of the kind of results seen during the qualifiers would be required to turn things around for the Polish player. The good news is that her performance in the qualifiers here saw her easily defeat both of her opponents. Frech defeated Anna Dalinina 7-5, 6-3 before dispatching Danielle Lao in the second qualifier with a loss of only six games.
While Yulia Putintseva has put on a good show at times this season, it may not be considered one of her best. And her recent performances can help to explain why. Putintseva has only won one match since reaching the quarterfinals of the Toronto Open as part of the US Open Series. In fact, she took a month-long break after the US Open, but she was defeated in a San Diego qualifier match. Previously, Putintseva had lost four of the five matches she had played in before taking a break. She’ll be up against a player she beat earlier this year, as well as one who hasn’t been in great form herself. The question is whether Putintseva can use this advantage, as well as her superior pedigree, to prevail.
