On Tuesday, Serbia's Dusan Lajovic and Italy's Fabio Fognini square off in the opening round of the 2022 ATP Winston-Salem Open.
This season, many have referred to Fabio Fognini as a player past his prime because of his consistency issues. He stated that he’s approaching closer to retirement and that his bad form on clay was particularly noticeable. He has, nevertheless, developed some form on North America’s hard courts. Although it came fairly suddenly, the fact that he had to play some qualifiers is certainly to blame. He should feel at ease when he begins his journey to Winston-Salem after a few strong victories, particularly in Cincinnati. He received a player in the round who he can definitely beat thanks to a strong draw. Even though he won’t likely defeat Jack Draper in round two, it would be beneficial for him to play one more match before departing for New York. He was 13-17 prior to this stretch of the season and is now 19-19. Overall, Fognini may be playing in one of his final seasons, but he will undoubtedly give it his all both here and in New York.
Dusan Lajovic did not participate in the Montreal tournament, but he did travel to Cincinnati and compete in the qualifiers to be admitted. Lorenzo Musetti proved to be superior, thus he didn’t get it. Lajovic dislikes playing on hard courts, and it is not difficult to see why. His record on them is 4-9, which is not great, but he has never felt at ease on them. He prefers clay, and he performs best there. Despite a few extremely impressive victories on the red dirt, this year has generally not been very good for him. Lajovic won’t likely be overly confident in his prospects in this contest, in my opinion. I don’t believe that will alter once he arrives in New York. He will endure this period of the year because he has no other option. He had winning seasons on hard courts prior to this, but over the course of the year, he just avoided the surface, which caused his performance level to decline.
Dusan Lajovic and Fabio Fognini are scheduled to face one another in the opening round of the 2022 Winston-Salem Open on Tuesday, August 23. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 21 till August 27.
