Leylah Fernandez and Liudmila Samsonova will face one another in a second round of the US Open 2022 on August 31.
Leylah Annie Fernandez, a previous US Open semifinalist, is off to a strong start in this year’s competition after she defeated Oceane Dodin 6-3, 6-4 in just 74 minutes. In contrast to Dodin’s 24, the 19-year-old Canadian served 10 aces, won 74% of the points after the first serve, and made just 9 unforced errors. Fernandez has taken a cautious approach to the 2022 season, focusing mostly on high-profile competitions. The current World No. 14 entered New York with a record of 17-10, the highlights of which included a title run in Monterrey and a quarterfinal finish at the French Open.
Liudmila Samsonova wasted no time in launching her US Open campaign, defeating Sara Bejlek 6-3, 6-1 in just an hour and seven minutes. Her feats included 19 wins, 22 unforced errors, and an 82% first-service win rate. Samsonova, who is now ranked World No. 35, had a good practice run en route to New York, winning the Citi Open and the WTA Cleveland. The Russian is now on an 11-match winning streak and has plenty of wind in her sails. This also represents a significant improvement in her form when compared to the first half of the season.
Leylah Fernandez and Liudmila Samsonova are scheduled to face one another in a second round match of the US Open 2022 on Wednesday, August 31. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
