Leylah Fernandez, ranked 14th in the world, will face Oceane Dodin, ranked 99th, in the opening round of the 2022 US Open on Tuesday.

Much was expected of Leylah Fernandez this year after she made the US Open final in 2021, but she has not been at her best. Her season record does indicate that she hasn’t been completely off the mark, but with 15 wins and 10 losses added to that, it does not show the kind of performance you would anticipate from a world number 14. Fernandez’s US Open Series form is likewise not particularly favourable. Fernandez participated in the two WTA 1000 tournaments in Canada and Cincinnati, but she only took home one round in each of those two events. Beatriz Haddad Maia eliminated Fernandez in the second round of her home competition, the Canadian Open. And then Ekaterina Alexandrova defeated her in straight sets in the first match in Cincinnati. As she gets ready to defend all the points she had gained by making it to the final last season, she will be hoping to put those performances in the past.
Dodin competed at the Sydney International fairly early in the season and, as a lucky loser, earned a spot in the main draw. But the Frenchwoman hasn’t even come close to doing that since then. Oceane Dodin lost in the opening round of the Australian Open, was disqualified from the WTA Dubai, and was subsequently eliminated from the Doha Open. She recently competed on the ITF circuit in Bronx and lost in the first round. She then experienced the similar outcome at the Granby Open. Dodin will be a strong second favourite going into this match because there is very little in the way of hard court surface precedent to go on.
Leylah Fernandez and Oceane Dodin are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.

The 2022 US Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 29 and conclude on September 11 this year.
