Leylah Fernandez and Ekaterina Alexandrova will face each other in the Opening round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Monday, August 15.
After missing the entire grass court season due to her quarterfinal performance at the French Open, Leylah Fernandez returned to the circuit last week with her first appearance on the US Open Series when she competed in the Canadian Open. She was defeated in the second round by Beatriz Haddad Maia, after narrowly defeating Storm Sanders in the first round. Fernandez’s rustiness was evident in both of her matches, but with that out of the way, she would be much more confident starting things off here. Fernandez won her second WTA title earlier this year on the hard courts of the Monterrey Open.
Ekaterina Alexandrova hasn’t played competitive tennis in two months after losing in the second round of the WTA Berlin. Alexandrova chose not to compete in any US tournaments until now because she was unable to compete at Wimbledon due to the tournament’s ban on Russian and Belarusian players. Alexandrova, who won the Rosmalen Open in June, will enter this match with only three wins from eight hard court matches this season. That comes as something of a surprise for the world number 28, given that she had won all three of her previous titles on hard courts. Fernandez defeated Alexandrova in straight sets in their only previous meeting in Adelaide.
Leylah Fernandez and Ekaterina Alexandrova are scheduled to face one another in the Opening round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Monday, August 15. The tournament is scheduled to run from August 14 till August 21.
The 2022 Cincinnati Open will see six rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These include the round of 64, round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final for both men’s and women’s. The tournament is scheduled to commence on August 14 and conclude on August 21 this year.
