Denis Shapovalov defeated Taylor Fritz in a tense three-set match in the second round of the ATP Vienna tournament this week to exact revenge for a discouraging three-set loss he suffered to the Turin prospect in the semifinal of the ATP Tokyo tournament a few weeks earlier. After a commanding first set, he lost the initiative in the match, but he was able to pick up the pace and rule the final set, 6-1 4-6 6-3. The Canadian had low hopes going into this week because he lost to Alex de Minaur in straight sets in the quarterfinal of the ATP Stockholm tournament and was 0-2 in Vienna (before 2022).

Dan Evans had a rough first-round performance against an underperforming Oscar Otte, but he got better and defeated Karen Khachanov, the former world’s eighth-ranked player, in the second round with scores of 6-4 7-6 and 6-2 6-2. The British player experienced a dry stretch in the first half of the 2022 season, much like his opponent Denis Shapovalov, but so far in the second half appears to have rediscovered some consistency. Since the start of the summer hardcourt season, he has had five quarterfinal or better finishes, and he stands a very good chance of breaking into the top 20.
