Carabelli entered the main draw with ample confidence after qualifying for the event with a win against Facundo Bagnis in one of the qualifying rounds. The good news is that he was drawn to play Daniel Elahi Galan, who has struggled with form this season. And that’s exactly what happened with Carabelli after he saved two set-points in the first set of the match. Carabelli, who had only won one main draw match at the top level prior to this, doubled his win total with a 7-6 (7), 6-3 victory. It was also his first victory in the main draw of the year. Carabelli reached the semifinals of one of the Challenger events earlier this season, but his ranking has dropped to 127th from 96th at one time. A couple of wins here will get him back to his best.

Lajovic, a qualifier here, had entered the main draw with only one victory all season. And that record isn’t an outlier for Lajovic, who was formerly rated 23rd in the world but has since dropped to 90th in the ATP rankings. As a result, when he faced last year’s Cordoba Open victor Sebastian Baez, Lajovic was an 8/5 underdog to end his opponent’s winning streak. When Lajovic dropped the first set of their first-round encounter, the odds grew even longer, and the writing appeared to be on the wall. Except that no one seems to have written the script for Lajovic, who turned the match around and won it 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in two hours and 32 minutes. Baez served for the match after winning the opening set and was up 5-3 in a match that featured 13 service breaks in total. Dusan Lajovic broke him and won the set in a tie-breaker before dominating the deciding 4-0. While Baez made a last-ditch effort to turn things around with a break in the sixth game, his Serbian opponent raced away with the match from that point on.
