The first meeting of the season between former world No. 1s Daniil Medvedev and Novak Djokovic took place in the semifinal in Astana, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The Serbian was never at ease, had a little bit of luck in the second-set tiebreaker, and would be relieved to see the Russian give up after dropping the second set. Former world number one would like to atone for his unlucky year of missing two grand slams and losing the top spot by successfully defending the Paris Masters title and winning his first ATP Finals championship since 2015 in the coming weeks. With one more victory in Astana, he would essentially be guaranteed a spot in the season-ending competition in Turin. Thanks to his success at Wimbledon this year, he only needs to be in the top 20 of the ATP Race.

Third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas got the better of Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-final. Tsitsipas held on in what was a nervy first set and broke late in the second to win the match 7-6(8), 6-3. This was the first time in the last seven matches that these two have settled things in straight sets. The Greek is yet to drop a set in Kazakhstan so far, although it was in some real jeopardy against Hurkacz and Luca Nardi.
