Djokovic and Dimitrov will take on each other in the third round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 21.
Although Novak Djokovic’s hamstring problem is bothersome, it hasn’t prevented him from making progress at the Australian Open thus far, in part because his rivals were unable to put much of a strain on him. In the opening round, Roberto Carballes Baena was unable to win a set, and Enzo Couacaud only managed to win three games in the three sets he lost, 6-3 6-4 6-0 and 6-1 6-7 6-2 6-0, respectively. A few weeks ago, the Serbian suffered a hamstring injury during the opening round of the ATP Adelaide. He needed medical attention during his matches against Sebastian Korda in the final, which he won, and Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals, both of which he lost.
Without dropping a set, Grigor Dimitrov advanced to the third round of the Australian Open. In the second round, he defeated Laslo Djere of Serbia, 6-3 6-2 6-0. On his best days, the Bulgarian can compete at the highest level of tennis, as evidenced by his career-high ranking of #3 in the ATP rankings in 2017. However, during his prime years, he was not as successful in slams due to his inability to perform in crunch time against the Big-Three players. He has faced a Big Three player seven times in slams so far in his career, losing six of those matches. His lone victory came at the US Open against a fading Roger Federer.

The 10-to-1 record of Novak Djokovic includes exhibitions. If Grigor Dimitrov can stay in the game for a longer period of time and take advantage of the Serbian’s current fitness issues, which is something he is capable of doing, it is uncertain whether he will actually do it.
