One of the most difficult tests at the ATP 500 level in recent years was facing Andrey Rublev, but Grigor Dimitrov passed that test with little difficulty. He got out to a strong start in the match and never really gave the Russian a chance to settle and get back into it, losing 6-3, 6-4. The Bulgarian, who hadn’t won consecutive matches since the French Open and had lost his previous three matches, did well to advance to the ATP 500 event’s quarterfinals without dropping a set before coming in Vienna earlier this week. Notably, his bouts have finished exactly at 6-3 6-4 so far this season (against Thiago Monteiro in R1).

In the second round this week, Marcos Giron easily defeated Cameron Norrie in straight sets by taking full advantage of his unimpressive play since recovering from COVID. On the British player’s serve, he overcame all three breakpoint opportunities and never trailed, winning 6-3 6-4. The American has had successful seasons in the past, and this week in Vienna, he’s on. He finished the 2019 season by winning a Challenger title in Houston, reached the round of 16 as a qualifier at the Paris Masters in 2020, made his first-ever main tour quarterfinal appearance in Antwerp, and produced outstanding success on indoor hard courts during this period of the 2021 season.
